Choosing a rescue dog can be a difficult choice -all of our Spanish strays are so grateful and lovable, and make such wonderful pets, I wonder why anybody would ever want to buy from a breeder.If you have made up your mind to take one of our strays, or indeed, any other rescued dog, do think very carefully about which kind of dog would suit your particular lifestyle. The last thing an unwanted dog needs is to find a loving home only to discover that after a short while he is unloved again and considered a nuisance.If you are at home a good deal of the time and are active, there is no reason not to enjoy long walks with a larger active dog providing you have the space to accommodate him. Many large dogs such as greyhounds or big heavy dogs do not need as much exercise as smaller highly strung dogs- and greyhounds in particular usually make docile pets.If you work part-time (you really should not consider taking a dog if there is nobody at home all day) a smaller less active dog would not require such lengthy walks although many small dogs are highly active. You should ask advice to the dog's particular needs from the refuge where the dog has been looked after.Don't expect miracles when your dog first arrives. He will be very confused especially if he is one of our Spanish dogs who may well have spent years in the refuge or tied up somewhere.With quiet love and understanding he will settle. Just give him his own time and space to adjust. So many people want to make a big fuss of the dog when he arrives, inviting friends and family to meet him - but there will be plenty of time in the future for this. Leave him be, just speaking in a friendly tone to him as you go about the house. The less fuss you make- so will he.Another consideration when deciding which rescue dog to choose is whether you have time to spend grooming a long coat. If not stick to a dog with short hair as long coats need regular attention to keep them healthy. Dog or Bitch? I personally really don't have a preference.All our dogs are neutered before arriving in England for re homing, and they all have distinct personalities.If you already have one dog it is usually best to choose a second one of the opposite sex, to avoid completion as to who is going to be "top dog". If your reason for taking on a rescued dog is to provide your existing dog with a friend, please be sure that you have the patience and ability to persevere in the event that the first dog does not like or accept his new friend.A couple of dogs have been returned to me for this reason, not through any fault of their own, just because the owners had not thought it through first, and all it achieve was to make an insecure little dog even more insecure. Young or Old?Lastly do consider an "oldie" if you can. They are usually wonderful pets and great characters. It is so sad that they are forgotten especially when if like our Spanish strays they have been confined to a refuge for years. Some say they are institutionalized and will not settle but this simply is not true. I have rehomed several (whom were thought to be quite ancient) but am pleased to say they are still going strong after five or six years! Whichever dog you decide on make sure you have given the matter some careful thought. Think carefully before taking him Do not expect too much from him at first Give him lots of love and you will receive lots in return!

Akita Rescue - Own the Best Dog in the World

The Akita dog is one of the most remarkable and awe-inspiring breeds that you can encounter. Simply by looking at the dog you can see how noble, dignified and magnificent this creature is. This breed has noble beginnings in Japan, owned exclusively by Shoguns and aristocracy centuries ago. They accompany their masters almost everywhere. Akita dogs served faithfully and effectively as guard dogs, hunting dogs and companions. They were used to herd wild boars, elks, and even black bears until the hunters arrive. Their sense of smell, sight and hearing are unsurpassed. Until now, centuries after, little has changed for this dignified breed. There was this touching story of one of the most venerated Japanese Akita named Hachi-Ko. He was owned by Professor Eizaburo Ueno and they lived near the Shibuya Train Station. Everyday when the professor goes to work he accompanies him to the train station and at 4 o'clock in the afternoon they go back to the house together. On May 25, 1925, as always, Hachi-Ko waited for his master's arrival at the train station. Sadly, his master never came.He died at work after suffering a stroke. After that, Hachi-Ko was cared for by Professor Eizaburo Ueno's relatives. He was as loving to them as with his master. But he never stopped their vigil. Everyday he will go to the train station as if accompanying his master to work and at 4 o'clock he will wait for his arrival. He did this 9 years until his death. His moving story was told around the world and a bronze statue of Hachi-Ko was erected at the train station in is honor. Deserving enough the Akita dog was declared the Japanese National Monument. Years after this the Akitas have gained popularity around the world. Their magnificence recognized. And their breed prospered. Their numbers have increased but unfortunately the need for Akita rescue is also in order. There are several organizations that aims to help abandoned Akitas like the Akita Rescue Society of America and Akita Rescue Society of Florida. People around the country work hand in hand in helping these dogs get out of cruel conditions and provide homes for them. You can financially support the programs and fund raising projects they put up, volunteer in Akita Rescue work and adopt a new family member. Own the best dog in the world and you will not regret it. You will have a loyal companion to share your lives with. That by itself is reward for doing something right for these wonderful creatures.

Adopting a Jack Russell Rescue Dog

Many conscientious pet owners these days are aware of the problem of dog overpopulation. Because of irresponsible breeders and owners, millions of dogs around the world are put down every year in animal shelters and vet clinics for no other reason than the fact that they do not have a loving home to go to. The simple fact is that there are more dogs in the world than loving pet owners.Jack Russell Terriers (JRTs) are especially prone to meeting such a fate. Because they are small and very cute, many people mistakenly believe they would make good dogs for young children. Either that, or they don't anticipate the exercise requirements needed by this highly active breed. What these people are not aware of is that the Jack Russell was bred to hunt. It is a very active, energetic dog, and often does not get along well with other pets such as cats, unless properly socialized at an early age.Because of these factors, there are now many JRTs in shelters and Jack Russell rescue organizations around the world. If you're interested in helping to save one of these plucky little pups from a terrible fate by offering it a loving home, here's what you need to know about adopting a Jack Russell.

1. Consider the age of the dog you adopt. The care requirements for a puppy are very different to those for an adult or aging dog. Also, remember that Jack Russells can live for upwards of 15 years. This is a long-term commitment.
2. Adoption is generally a lot cheaper than buying a new puppy.
3. Make sure you check out any health problems that may exist in the dog. Rescue workers are usually volunteers and will be very honest with you on this matter, as opposed to some puppy breeders who are only concerned with money.
4. Try to get some idea of the life the dog has had up until this point. If the dog has been severely mistreated and poorly socialized, you may have to be prepared for a rough ride as far as training out bad behaviors that have built up over time. But remember that no dog is ever a lost cause - you might be the only person with the heart and patience to adopt a "problem case."
5. To find a dog to adopt, you can try to contact local Jack Russell clubs, breeders, vets, or contact a Jack Russell rescue club directly by finding them in the phonebook or online.
6. Remember that rescue dogs will typically be neutered and microchipped when you adopt them. These are both good things. Microchipping means that if your dog is lost of stolen you have a good chance of getting it back. The fact that these dogs are neutered means that they won't contribute any further to the overpopulation problem. If you have plans to breed then an adoption dog is not right for you, but you should not breed unless you have researched the subject and the breed itself and have the advice of other experienced breeders to guide you through. Breeding should only be done out of a commitment to maintain and improve the breed.
7. If you already own a dog, be aware that a rescue dog may not get along well with it. Many rescue dogs are not socialized well with other animals. With some dogs, however, this will not be an issue. Most Jack Russell Terrier rescue organizations will allow you to have a trial run to see how well the dog fits into your home.
8. Don't be surprised if someone from the rescue organization wants to ask you a lot of questions and check out your house. These people are passionate about JRTs and they want to ensure these animals will not end up back at a shelter or rescue centre, so they are often very selective about who they will allow to adopt their dogs. Don't be offended by this as it's standard practice.
